Do I need extra equipment to make my computer accessible? No, you don’t. There are built-in accessibility features for both Apple products and Windows products. Apple has several commonly used built-in features. Dictation, Speech to text, is the most commonly used feature. You can create notes, emails or search the web with this option. VoiceOver is another feature that is built-in text to speech. It tells you exactly what is on your screen and talks you through actions or helps to quickly navigate from one app to another. Text to speech allows you to go from written word to spoken word. You can highlight any text and have it read aloud. Switch Control allows you to control your Mac without lifting a finger. With switch control, you can navigate through onscreen keyboards, menus, and the Dock using a variety of switch options. These are just a few of the Apple built-in accessibility features. Windows has many built-in features also. Narrator is a commonly used screen reader that reads aloud text and describes events so that you can use the computer without a display. Speech recognition allows you to dictate into almost any application without needing a keyboard or a mouse. Sometimes using an external microphone will increase accuracy also. There is also a built-in magnifier that allows you to zoom in on your screen or portions of your screen. You can access even more features for windows by going to Ease of Access in your settings. With all these accessibility features, they can empower every person to achieve more, whether your personal limits last a day or a lifetime.
